PERISTYLIUM

The peristylum is a porticoed room in the largest Roman houses, which is located in the innermost part, at the back of the house. The Latin name comes from the Greek περίστυλος which means surrounded by columns.

According to its size, the house could have one or two, and could be a garden in which to receive the most illustrious visitors, have a garden called hortus, the viridarium, a small pond that could be used for bathing or that could contain fish, and then it was called a pool.
